Social Studies Curriculum this year covers the regions of the United States. We will start with the Northeast Region and we will move on from there. We will also complete a unit about the United States Government. We will discuss Washington D.C. with the government unit. There are links below to Government Study Guides. One is from Kids.gov and one is created from the vocabulary words we need to know.
The regions will follow a "road trip" format where we will pretend to go to that region and "visit" the states in that region. We will wear different "hats" like a social scientist and learn about the regions by focusing on that region's history, economy, geography and civics. There will be videos and role play activities to do.
Each week, we have clues about a state. At the end of the week students will make a guess of what state it is and support their thought with evidence. I will reveal the Mystery State and will share some fun, strange laws from that state.
At some point, students will also study the Revolutionary War for a writing unit and write a piece about the war. The research portion will be integrated with reading and writing class when we get to informational writing.
We also will ask families to help us gather postcards or photos from different states. We will have a map on display and will add to it whenever we get a new postcard/photo. There will be more information about this coming home soon.
